The changes in rules went side by side with changes in the fundamental moves of some chess pieces. The move of pawns was not always as it is right now. The same goes to the queens and bishops. These alterations proved vital in the development of the game. Although the moves of some chess pieces have changed, there are also others that have maintained their very nature. Knights, rooks, and kings all possess the same moves from the game's inception down until the recent times.

Some of the most recent rule changes in chess were standardized for use in chess tournaments and competitions. The en passant rule, the principle of castling, and the movement of pawns were added during the medieval period. The stalemate, threefold repetition, and the fifty move rules were also implemented. These were then followed by the touch-move and j'adoube rules.
